As coaches, volunteers or professionals within sport, learning about what we do and how we go about doing it effectively is never-ending journey, through some really good stuff (i.e. watching our performer attain their potential), but also some quite uncomfortable stuff (i.e. pratices which might not have worked quite as well as we had hoped)!
Our learning takes place in a multitude of different arenas: each time we think about what we have done, and what the individuals in our charge got from the session; or if when we see someone else delivering something which we have ourselves delivered, but in a way which is different, and new, and exciting for the performers; or when we chat to other coaches, volunteers or professionals in sport on the side-lines, about issues and challenges they have faced, and what their solutions were.
Learning about our sports is not something that finishes when we gain our qualifications, or exists at a constant level after we ourselves have finished participating as a performer in our own right; but it is something that evolves, matures and challenges us, right the way through our involvement.
So, the addition of a specific education and training role within Disability Sport Wales is an exciting move. It will enable all of us involved with disability sport to continue to challenge our thinking and practice through involvement with education and training, and to encourage those who are not currently involved with disability sport to become more proactive in their inclusive provision and practice. Coaches, volunteers and professionals in sport are the life-blood, and we all have valuable experiences to share and utilise in what we do on a daily/weekly/monthly basis. If you have any queries, questions or comments relating to education and training, please send an email to Fiona Reid (education and training consultant for Disability Sport Wales) : fiona.reid@fdsw.org.uk or call 0845 846 0021

Case Study
Name – Cath Hares
Cath is the Blaenau-Gwent Leisure Activates Manager but outside of his work time she develops, coaches and plays for Tredegar Netball Club.
Every week the club coaches for ages from 7 to seniors in an number of leagues and with an inclusive programme. Cath is also involved in coach leader awards for the specific sport and has recently delivered programmes to a large number of new wanna be coaches in the Blaenau-Gwent area.
Tredegar Netball Club and Cath as head coach is one such example, with both the ladies and the junior section receiving over £5,000 each from the Community Chest pot.
Community Chest allowed for the establishment of recreational ladies netball in Tredegar back in 2002, with the funding injected into the purchase of equipment and other start-up costs involved with the set-up of a netball club.
Catherine Hares, Head Coach for Tredegar Netball Club and Sport and Active Living Manager for Blaenau Gwent has been heavily involved with netball across the county and explains the impact that Community Chest has had on netball in the area:
"Consistently applying for Community Chest grants has led to Tredegar Netball Club going from strength to strength over the past seven years. The funding has been ploughed in to expanding the sessions on offer to incorporate a wider age range and a more diverse range of activities."
Both senior recreational and competitive netball, youth netball, aqua netball, mini netball and mixed netball amongst other activities are all available through the club to budding players in Tredegar and have largely been funded with National Lottery cash.
With two teams at every age group from U10 through to the seniors, who compete in the South East Wales league, the club has over 100 members playing competitively and a further 30 members who participate in the recreational activities on offer.
Previous to all this responsibility and development Cath began in sport as a volunteer for a local swim club in her youth. The rewards and benefits of volunteering, participating and then coaching were a definite drive for her success in life and sport as you can see today in BG netball. Such dedication and passion showing a true professional, well done.
