19 year old Gemma Nuton received the Highly Commended certificate for Young Volunteer of the Year Award at the recent Pembrokeshire Volunteering Awards 2012 at the Pavillion Withybush Showground. Gemma has been a volunteer with Sport Pembrokeshire since October 2011, she volunteers at Crymych Panther Boccia club and Pembrokeshire Hurricanes Wheelchair Basketball club. Both clubs are for youngsters and adults with disabilities. Crymcyh Panthers meet every Wednesday evening and Gemma attends all sessions; most of the members have physical disabilities and some also have speech impairments. Gemma was very confident from day one and her interaction with the members was evident. Boccia is a complex sport and Gemma quickly began to understand the rules. Gemma has refereed at both the Pembrokeshire school and adult boccia event, starting at 8.30 am by helping to mark out the court and continuing until 2.30pm on both days.
Pembrokeshire Hurricanes meet on Friday every fortnight from 3.30 – 5pm. Gemma arrives at 3pm to help get the chairs and equipment ready. One of the members of the club has complex need and Gemma began working with him by her own initiative, the progress he has made is phenomenal. The members of both clubs are very fond of Gemma. She has excellent leadership skills and has a bubbly personality and is a great asset to the clubs concerned.
