History
During the early 1960's a group of anglers who's lives revolved around Cwmbran New Towns Largest Employer, Girling organised trips far and wide with one aim in mind, that of catching a large bag of fish.
This group of young men decided that what Cwmbran needed was a professionally run Angling Association, providing Angling for the people of Cwmbran and its surrounding areas.
It all started on the 3rd September 1963, at the Kings Head Hotel in Pontnewydd where the first Legal Constitution was adopted, and Cwmbran Angling Association was Born.
Its first committee was adopted and given the authority to develop. Looking at models from Pontypool and Newport Angling Associations, it was decided that Cwmbran needed a bright new approach to attract members from the existing clubs.
Present Day
Since this time new access and safety features at Five Locks Basin, Cwmbran are allowing everyone in Torfaen to enjoy fishing, refurbishments of the canal include facilities for disabled anglers to enjoy coarse fishing on the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal.
The installation of stop rails, safety gates and an evenly-surfaced, gently sloping path up to the towpath means that more disabled anglers can now relax outdoors and enjoy fishing for carp, pike, rudd and roach. The new facilities were funded by Cwmbran Regeneration Partnership (Cwmbran Community Council and Croesyceiliog and Llanyrafon Community Council) and the Environment Agency Wales’ Sustainable Fisheries Programme.
Members of Cwmbran Angling Association, who own the fishing rights to this section of the canal, provide coaching sessions for anglers and their support workers. If you want to join, have a session or just find out more information please feel free to contact Mike who'll be happy to help.
Daniel Smith and Lee Edwards contacted Mike to get involved with fishing. Lee Edwards supports Daniel Smith, 21, who has cerebral palsy said ‘It’s great to see people enjoying these facilities. When Daniel brings a fish in, he’s really happy - he caught a couple of roach last year.’
