Visually Impaired Shooters Successful Open Evening

The Modern Print Target Club in collaboration with Angela Miles the Disability Sports development officer for Pembrokeshire held an open evening on the 24th July at Pennar Community School for people with a visual impairment. Six visually impaired people tried the sport of shooting.  The shooters surprised themselves and the club officials with their success to hit the bull’s eye more often than not.  The level of achievement was very high indeed, especially as this was their first time shooting.

The sight, which is designed for use on an air rifle at a range of 10m looks like a conventional telescopic sight and is mounted on the rifle in the same way.  The sight collects and measures the level of light reflected from the target using a photoelectric cell, which is then converted into sound.  The centre of the target is brilliant white and moving outwards from the centre increasingly darker levels of grey are encountered until off he target is black.  The closer to the centre of the target you are aiming the greater you are aiming the greater the level of light reflected and hence the higher the frequency of sound which is heard by the shooter via a pair of headphones.  The club is grateful to John Kelman of the Three Counties Air Target Club Carmarthen for the use of their equipment.  Trevor Collins of Modern Print the club’s sponsors together with two members of the Haverfordwest Gun Club also attended.  All the shooters have expressed an interest in continuing with shooting, Angela is working with the club to locate premises where visual impaired shooting can continue.
