About Us
We are a small but friendly Bowls Club that was formed in 1926 and is situated in the old mining village of Garndiffaith at the Welfare Ground which is just north of Pontypool Torfaen, South Wales UK.
Our membership consists of a Ladies Section, Mens Section, and a Youth Section.
The Green is in the Welfare Ground which is behind Hillcrest and opposite Severn View - NP4 7SN. The Car Park is opposite Severn View next to a row of garages up the ramp.
We have bowls facilities that are for all groups to participate in especially youth and disabled people Throughout the summer we play outdoors, and in the winter we play indoors on two new short mat rinks.
Cost of Club membership is £10 for Adults and £2 for the youth which is renewed annually. All fees to be paid to the Secretary at the AGM. A season ticket has to be obtained from: Mr David Mutlow: the groundsman at the Green for Torfaen County Borough Council.
The TCBC Green fees for 2007 are £33.35p adults, £16.40p senior citizens & youth. These fees allow you to use the facilities at all TCBC Bowling Greens.
Although the green isn’t wheelchair accessible during the summer months the club does have a indoor facility that is accessible to wheelchair users during the winter months. Training during the winter is on a Tuesday and Thursday from 2pm.
What do you need to get Started?
The simple answer to above is - very little. If you have a mind to try out the game of Bowls there are two ways of doing this without incurring much expense. The first is to go to your nearest bowling green and pay for a session. This should cost no more than a modest sum and for that you will be able to hire a set of bowls.
All you must ensure is that you are wearing flat smooth rubber soled shoes without heels. Alternatively, you could go along to your local Club similarly attired and ask to have a trial go. Most Clubs have practice bowls and a member willing to join you for a roll up. There would be no obligation and they would be happy to see you. This would also let you get to meet some of the members and whether you would like to join in the future.
Bowlers at Garndiffaith are a friendly lot.
So You Have Decided its for You
The next step is to decide which Club to join and to fill in an application form.
Bowling Clubs are not just about playing bowls there is much more to them and it is important that you feel comfortable with the members. After all you will be spending a lot of your time in their company.
First Essentials
To get properly started you will require your own set of bowls, not necessarily new, and casual play wear as per the Club rules, normally white shirt or blouse and grey trousers or skirt, and of course proper bowling shoes.
You could be looking at spending (assuming you buy secondhand bowls) approx £120 on clothing and equipment.
Then you will have in your first year Club fees and Green fees perhaps another £30 or so. These are a rough guide of your initial outlay.
