Hello, my name is Beverley Tucker, the Disability Sport Wales Development Officer for Powys County Council.
In Powys we have helped develop community clubs in each area which cater for all disabilities and many sports. Throughout the major towns of Machynlleth, Newtown, Llandrindod Wells, Brecon and Ystradgynlais we have developed multi sport clubs for children with a disability. Each club has its own trained volunteers and coaches through the Disability Sport Wales scheme.
A new Disabled cricket league has been established this year in Mid Wales and several schools are now participating in the FAW Trust Disability Football in schools programme. Powys offers opportunities in Swimming, Bowls, Cricket, Archery and Shooting with trained coaches and local competitive opportunities.
Whether you are looking to try a new sport, or to take part in competitions for fun or achievement, Powys should be able to find a sport that is right for you! Thank you for visiting this site and please get in touch to find out more.

Powys Panthers Pan Disability Football Festival A Success
Teams from all over South Wales descended upon Llandrindod Wells Sports Centre yesterday in what was to prove to be a fantastic day’s football.
It was the turn of Llandrindod Wells to host this regional event, which sees club sides come together to play friendly fixtures against each other. The Friendly fixtures, arranged and supported by The Welsh Football Trust and Disability Sports Wales, are hoping to generate interest from clubs to participate in a structured league next season.
Players with various disabilities took part in 3 age groups – U12, U16 and 16+. The home side Powys Panthers, who had players from Ystradgynlais, Brecon and Llandrindod, competed well in the U12 section. Team Manager Matthew Tanner said ‘the players competed extremely well today. There were a couple of new faces in the side who proved to be great additions to the team’.
The older teams competed outside in the drizzly conditions, but the weather wasn’t going to overshadow the talented football on display. Host team, Powys Panthers, were up against it once more in the U16 group playing round robin matches against Ceredigion Stars, Afan Lido Dragons, Cleddau Warriors and Pont Dragons. Powys Disability Sports Officer and team manager on the day, Beverley Tucker said ‘players showed great enthusiasm and determination throughout. We came up against some very strong sides from South Wales who competed well’.
In the 16+ category the matches were split into two groups – The Premiership and The Championship. In the Championship Newport Dragons, Vale Reds, Cleddau Warriors and Afan Lido Dragons contested each other in a very closely fought group. Newport Dragons A and Ceredigion Stars made up the Premiership playing out some great passing football which was a delight to watch.
The clubs should be commended for the attitude of their players, coaches and parents – they have been first class’. The Club would also like to thank Geraint and Karen Davies from the Junior club, the volunteers who provided refreshments on the day and all Sports Centre Staff who were most helpful throughout.
If you would like to join the Llandrindod Wells Disability Junior Football Club, weekly sessions are held on Friday evenings at Llandrindod Sports Centre. For more information please contact Joyce Thomas on 01597 810325.
