Hello, my name is Beverley Tucker, the Disability Sport Wales Development Officer for Powys County Council.
In Powys we have helped develop community clubs in each area which cater for all ages and many sports. Throughout the major towns of Machynlleth, Newtown, Llandrindod Wells, Brecon and Ystradgynlais we have developed multi sport clubs for children with a disability. Each club has its own trained volunteers and coaches through the Disability Sport Wales scheme.
Mid Wales has its own Junior Disabled Cricket team which competes in competitions throughout the year in England and Wales.
A Disability Football team called the Powys Panthers has been recently established, which competes in leagues across South Wales organised through the FAW Trust .
Disability Sport in Powys also offers opportunities in Sailing , Canoeing, Table Tennis, Bowls, Cricket, Archery, Swimming and Shooting .

Wheelchair Rugby comes to Builth Sports Centre

Players from all over Wales will be joining together for the first of a series of training days to find new participants for the two Wheelchair rugby teams in Wales which play in National Leagues.
Wheelchair rugby , attracted a massive amount of media attention at the Beijing Paralympics , with GB narrowly missing out on a medal, with closely fought battles against the USA , New Zealand and Australia .
The sport is for wheelchair users with a level of upper limb impairment.

Cricket Development -Llandrindod Wells

From 2pm-4pm , at Llandrindod Wells Sports Centre , on Thursday 30th of October, players from across Powys will be recieving coaching and match practice from Paul Cartwright WACD manager for Cricketer`s with a Disability .

A show case of Disability Sport was held at the National Indoor Athletics Centre ( NIAC) in UWIC, Cardiff , on the 8th of June to launch the Paralympic Roadshow opened by Sebastion Coe, Chairman of the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic games in 2012.
Athletes, Schoolchildren and Adult Day service users , travelled from all over Powys to attend the day and to train with the FDSW Academy, which was hailed a great success with over 400 people attending.
Powys now supplies three athletes to the Federation of Disability Sport Wales Academy which include :-
Fourteen year old Crickhowell Schoolboy , Daniel Lucker , runner up in this years Wheelchair marathon; Fourteen year old Luke Joseph , Sprinter and Athlete from Brynllywarch Hall School in Kerry, Newtown and Robert Davies , aged 23 from Brecon who is now a member of the GB Table tennis squad.
In addition ,other athletes working towards 2012 are locally based Josie Pearson, member of the Wheelchair Basketball team, from Hay on Wye and Terry Ottewell , Visually impaired European Archery Champion from Brecon.
Newcomer , Lyn Thomas fromYstradgynlais is also enjoying success in Wheelchair Tennis . He took up the sport, joining a club and competing just over a year ago.
The interest in competitive sport in Powys is huge and we have more potential performers waiting in the wings to be called up to the academy which is based in Cardiff, at NIAC and the Welsh Institute of Sport..

Table tennis a big hit in brecon

Powys launch new Table Tennis Initiative
Spearheaded by GB Table Tennis player Robert Davies , from Brecon . A new session for Table Tennis players at Brecon Leisure Centre has been launched with help from Sportlot Powys Community Chest .
Funding has been granted for a new accessible table and funding to train Volunteers to become table tennis coaches.
The first night attracted twenty players from across Brecon and Radnorshire .
"The sessions take place at Brecon Leisure Centre from 7-8pm in the Activity Hall on Monday evening `s , and cost £2 per session.
An additional session is available on Friday afternoons from 12:30-3pm
