Blaenau Gwent

Blaenau Gwent

We are also fortunate in Blaenau Gwent with many mainstream clubs, operating a fully inclusive policy such as Tredegar Mini netball, Cwm judo club, and Cefn Golau fishing club. These clubs are open to anyone wishing to attend, with extra provisions put in place for people with disabilities to attend.  For more information on which clubs operate on a fully inclusive policy, please contact myself.

During each school holiday period, there are numerous fun activities for 8 – 12 year olds, such as football, rugby, kids fit, and hockey fun days.  All Fun days operate a fully inclusive policy and are open to any young person with a disability. A mentor will be assigned to any young person registered with a disability to assist them through the various activities. All these activities are advertised a few weeks prior to the holiday.

Young people also have access to the Swimming pools for free during the School Holiday periods.  As well as the traditional swim there are fun games and inflatables available at certain times.

Through working closely with Social Services and Barnados, an inclusive play scheme has been developed for the summer holiday.  The play scheme will be available for 3 different age brackets 5 – 7 year olds, 8 – 12 year olds and 13+.  During the scheme the young people will have the opportunity to try out various sport activities such as basketball, volleyball, hockey, and the traditional sports.

Thanks to the Boroughs new Healthy Living strategy there is also a range of new fitness classes for older people with disabilities, such as gentle exercise, armchair based exercises, swimming sessions, and walking way to health.  People can either be referred onto these classes, or just attend them as they see fit.

Tredegar Ironsides Rugby Club, working in partnership with Tredegar Development trust and myself, will soon be offering an adults Tag rugby session for people with learning difficulties. Tag rugby is a fast and fun game, with no contact and will surely be a big hit.  The sessions will be on a weekly basis and delivered by Tredegar coaches. It is hoped that with the extra coaching certain players will develop and be asked to join the main club.
