Monmouthshire

My aim now is to continue to serve the county of Monmouthshire as I endeavour to implement a variety of the new key focus sports. These have been initiated at the launch of DSW in April 2006. Focus sports for performance (FDSW) include:

ATHLETICS – BASKETBALL (female) – BOCCIA – CYCLING – JUDO – POWERLIFTING – ADAPTIVE ROWING – TABLE TENNIS – SWIMMING – WHEELCHAIR RUGBY – WHEELCHAIR TENNIS

Some of these opportunities are already running. However, any future development will also depend on the interest, demand, sustainability and availability of facilities for specific sports.

If you would like to link up with our VOUNTEERING COUNTS programme or coach some sessions for us, there’s plenty of areas where you can gain experience. There are courses we can direct you towards on the SCW Coach Education Website with some more locally in Monmouthshire.

You may also wish to have a link to your own club website from this site, or you may even wish to sign up for a section that you can update yourself on this site with all your sports club news if you are located in Monmouthshire. All you will need is a password!!

If you would like any further information on any of the above and I can be of any assistance please do not hesitate to contact me.

Keep in touch and sign up soon.

SWIMMING GALA DRAWS ACADEMY SWIMMER INTO THE MONMOUTHSHIRE LIME LIGHT

SWIMMING GALA DRAWS ACADEMY

SWIMMER INTO THE

MONMOUTHSHIRE LIME LIGHT

As the second annual Disability Sport Wales Monmouthshire High Schools Gala got underway in Caldicot this week, many pupils had a taste of competitive swimming for the first time. The competition consisted of 17 races, covering three ability bands. Three of the four local authority high schools competed; Caldicot, Monmouth and Chepstow, with a total of 40 individual entries.

Gala Organiser - Claire Lampan, Monmouthshire’s Disability Sport Wales Development Officer was ‘really pleased with the response this year, but was still hopeful that next year, all four high schools will be able to attend, making it a full house!’

On an individual note, it was encouraging to learn, not all those competing are strangers to swimming galas’. Daniel Johnsey (Chepstow), who was spotted at last years gala and was consequentley ‘fast tracked’ to the Swimming Academy that was run by Federation of Disability Sport Wales in Swansea until recently, has made amazing progress in the last 12 months. "It was a joy to see Daniel swimming this year and to see him back in the pool, doing the sport that he loves. The gala has provided an ‘open door’ to be able to work with the schools, and to provide an opportunity for people like Daniel, to taste competitive swimming again is beyond words" said Claire.

Sarah Johnsey, Daniels Mum said "Daniel was a competitive swimmer and swam for the City of Newport, until he was involved in a road traffic accident in November 2005 and seriously injured. After spending 8 months in hospital it took a lot to get him back in the pool and he has worked really hard to be where he is today"

At the close of this years event, Caldicot High School took the ‘Team Winners’ Cup, whilst Chepstow High School took the ‘Team Effort’ award. Each individual swimmer was also awarded an engraved crystal swimming cube.

CALDICOT TOWN JUNIOR AFC PROVIDE NEW CLUB OPPORTUNITIES FOR CHILDREN WITH VARIOUS DISABILITIES

14/08/2008

Caldicot Town Junior AFC have recently teamed up with Disability Sport Wales in Monmouthshire, to provide a new weekly football session, for children with mild to moderate disabilities.

February 2008 marked the start of 10 new football taster sessions for children in Monmouthshire between 8 – 16 years. The sessions were such a success with more than 23 children attending the one hour session over the 10 weeks, that Caldicot Town Junior AFC have since taken a further step, to embrace the session as part of their weekly club diary.

Head Coach for the disability sessions - Andrew Edwards, coaches the session with Volunteer Coach - Mark Foster, has been really encouraged by the response and was keen to start this new block of football sessions under the banner of Caldicot Town Junior AFC.

Claire Lampan – Disability Sport Wales Development Officer for Monmouthshire commented; ‘ This is such an encouraging start, both boys and girls are training regularly now, most of whom didn’t have any regular sporting club opportunity until this partnership was developed. We hope the team will continue to develop over the next season, and enter some friendly competitions in the South East Wales Region, where they will be able to play matches organised by the FAW Trust.’

Sessions continue to run on Friday evenings 6-7pm at Caldicot Leisure Centre playing fields.
