Conwy
Hi, my name is Mark Richards and I am the Disability Sport Wales Development Officer for Conwy County Borough Council. I have been fortunate enough to work within Disability Sport as a volunteer in many different sports over the last few years and I'm looking forward to further developing the wide range of activities that Conwy has to offer.
Conwy already offers some of the best sporting opportunities in Wales for people with disabilities. There are currently opportunities to play football both at a junior and senior level, take part in outdoor adventure activities including climbing, canoeing and orienteering as well as visiting The National Mountain Centre to ski. Conwy is also base to the best Disability Swimming Club in North Wales, The Conwy Whales.
So if you do have a disability and would like to take advantage of any of the sporting opportunities within Conwy or would just like more information then please give me a call.
Alternatively if you wish to get involved within disability sport as a volunteer in any capacity, whether it be as a coach, administrator or just a helping hand please get in touch for any support or information needed, as all clubs depend on the great work that volunteers contribute.
Thanks for visiting the site and I hope to hear off you soon.
Mark

Dylan's Hat Trick
04/04/2006
Dylan Davies had an amazing year in 2007. In February he swam 400mtrs (16 lengths) and then doubled this in May – swimming 800mtrs (32 lengths). Dylan (now 9) a member of Conwy Whales Swimming Club has hemiplegia which causes a weakness down one side of his body and means that he has to put in a lot of effort and is unable to swim very fast.
His ultimate goal was to swim a mile non-stop (64 lengths). In June Dylan did just that and raised £550 for Hemihelp, a charity which gives advice and support to parents of Children who have Hemiplegia. However Dylan was not satisfied and went on to swim the channel in the pool which is 22 miles (1408 lengths), which is swum relay style due to the distance. He was totally committed and swam 6 times per week, four of which were at 6:30am. Dylan didn’t miss one session and never complained although at times looked very tired. This swim was organised by ‘Aspire’, a charity which supports people with spinal cord injuries. Dylan raised £670.
Dylan received a lot of well deserved recognition. Firstly he was awarded Overall Young Person of the Year by the Visitor/Vale papers in October and received a trophy at their awards ceremony. Dylan was then chosen for the Special Achievement Award at Conwy County Borough Council’s Sports Awards in November. Finally Dylan was named Pioneer Child of the Year 2008 in February, and was taken out for the day with his mum and chauffer driven in a Mercedes, whilst all the while being modest about his achievements.
Dylan is now thinking about his next challenges which are to swim across Lake Geirionydd for fun and the Boxing Day Dip in Llandudno.
